Copenhagen Radio Kit868.95 MHz first · then 0.5–1766 MHz

Start with one genuine RTL-SDR Blog V4 and its dipole kit (608 kr delivered). Use it from your Mac to check whether your Diehl meters can be decoded. Only then buy a cheap always-on meter receiver, and add the Pi, LoRa board or gateway if you want them. Together, the first two buys come to about 1.004 kr.

Prices read on seller pages and baskets on 2026-10-04Delivered to Denmark, quantity 1ECB reference rates of 2026-10-02: €1 = 7.4736 kr, $1 = 6.658 kr, 1 SEK = 0.662 kr, £1 = 8.789 kr.

01What to buy, in order

Ranked by home delivery or service-point delivery to Copenhagen. No Danish shop stocks any of these radios, so there's no Copenhagen pickup option (see the pickup note further down). Every price links to the seller's product page.

1

Buy first: the explorer, and your meter test rig

RTL-SDR Blog V4 (R828D) + official Multipurpose Dipole Kit

from Electrokit (SE, authorised reseller); DHL Parcel Connect to a service point to Copenhagen
In stock Verified: product, photos, shipping

Covers almost everything on your list with one receiver: your meters at 868.95 MHz, aircraft at 1090 MHz, ships at 162 MHz, FM, DAB+, airband, ham bands and 433 MHz sensors. Shortwave works through its built-in upconverter. The dipole kit's telescopic elements can be set for each band. The V4 reached end-of-line on 14 May 2026, and this is a last batch from an authorised reseller, so buy now rather than wait. Its successor, the V4L, is sold out in Europe and its Mac drivers are behind.

Buy after the test: an always-on meter receiver

IoTLabs wM-Bus Gateway (ESP32 + SX1276 868 MHz, T1/C1, OLED, SMA antenna)

from IoTLabs via Lectronz (PL, ships from the EU); postal home delivery to Copenhagen
Low stock Verified: product, photos, shipping

A finished ESP32 + SX1276 receiver in a case, pre-flashed with ESPHome wM-Bus firmware that already includes the Hydrus and Sharky 774 drivers. Add your meter IDs (and keys, if needed) in the ESPHome dashboard. It reports to Home Assistant or MQTT, ships from the EU with no customs, and keeps the V4 free for exploring. Bring your own micro-USB cable and charger. Only buy it once step 1 shows your meters decode (see the meter section). SX1276 handles the long Hydrus telegrams. A budget version is the DIY CC1101 board below; it needs fine-pitch soldering.

Optional: a Pi to run receivers 24/7

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 2GB

from raspberrypi.dk; PostNord to a parcel shop to Copenhagen
In stock Verified: product, photos, shipping

A Pi 4 2GB handles one or two dongles running ADS-B (readsb/tar1090), AIS-catcher, rtl_433 and wmbusmeters around the clock. The Zero 2 W is out of stock everywhere checked, and the Pi 5 2GB costs as much as the 4GB. Add the official 15 W USB-C supply (89 kr) to the same order. Each always-on band needs its own dongle, because one RTL dongle sees only 2.4 MHz at a time. The usual second dongle is the Nooelec SMArt v5 below with a cheap 1090 MHz antenna.

Optional: LoRa and Meshtastic

Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V4 (S3R2), EU868, OLED, antenna

from Hexaspot (NL); PostNL mailbox parcel, 3–5 days to Copenhagen
In stock Verified: product, photos, shipping

The current Heltec board, EU868 build, shipped from the Netherlands in 3–5 days. Flash Meshtastic from the browser and join the Copenhagen mesh. Two boards cost 428 kr if you want to message between them. Don't plan on it as your meter receiver: SX1262 support in the ESPHome wM-Bus component is marked “limited frame length”, and the V4's front end needs extra pin handling.

Optional: see local LoRaWAN traffic

Elecrow ThinkNode G1 indoor LoRaWAN gateway, SX1302, EU868, 8 channels, PSU + antenna

from Berrybase (DE); DHL Paket to Copenhagen
In stock Verified: product, photos, shipping

A real 8-channel SX1302 gateway, in stock in Germany, with power supply and antenna. It joins The Things Network or runs its own ChirpStack. You'll see metadata from nearby LoRaWAN sensors; payloads stay encrypted unless the devices are yours. Cheap single-channel ESP32 “gateways” are not supported by TTN.

Later upgrades, if the dongle leaves you wanting more

Not needed for anything on your list. Worth it for cleaner reception near strong transmitters or for serious shortwave.

Later upgrade: HF to 2 GHz in one box

SDRplay RSP1B (1 kHz–2 GHz, 14-bit, 10 MHz)

from Eleshop (NL, Elektor's shop); UPS to Copenhagen
In stock Verified: product, photos, shipping

14-bit, 10 MHz, 1 kHz–2 GHz. The best all-rounder if shortwave matters. The SDRplay driver is closed source but runs on Mac, Linux and Pi; SDRplay's own store won't ship to the EU. No USB-B cable in the box.

02Your meters: what to expect

Both meters are supported, but probably encrypted

  • The Diehl HYDRUS and SHARKY 774 send wireless M-Bus (OMS) on 868.95 MHz, modes T1/C1. wmbusmeters has drivers for both (hydrus, sharky774).
  • Payloads are normally AES-128 encrypted with a key per meter. When you don't give a key, wmbusmeters automatically tries Diehl's factory default key on Diehl frames. If Brunata kept the default, your readings decode with no key at all.
  • If decryption fails, you still see each meter's ID, manufacturer (DME), type and signal strength, but not the readings. Ask Brunata or your housing association for the keys; utilities often refuse.
  • HYDRUS telegrams are long (200–250 bytes). Avoid the nanoCUL stick (148-byte buffer) and treat SX1262 boards with caution. CC1101, SX1276, IMST sticks and RTL-SDR dongles all handle them.

Test plan once the V4 arrives

  1. On the Mac: brew install rtl_433, then listen for wM-Bus:
    rtl_433 -f 868.95M -s 1200k -R 104 -F json
  2. Find your meters: match the IDs in the output to the serial numbers printed on the meters. Transmissions arrive every 14 s to a few minutes.
  3. Decode: build wmbusmeters (Mac and Linux supported) and run wmbusmeters --analyze rtlwmbus, or point it at your meter IDs with no key. Readings mean the default key works.
  4. If it decodes, buy the always-on receiver (pick 2), or run wmbusmeters on a Pi with the dongle. If it doesn't, request keys before buying anything meter-specific.

03The options compared

Prices are the cheapest verified delivered offer from section 05. An RTL dongle sees one 2.4 MHz slice at a time, so aircraft, ships and meters can't all be watched with a single dongle: every always-on band needs its own receiver.

09Things to know

Buy now or wait?

Buy the V4 now: it is end-of-line, authorised resellers describe their stock as the last batch, and the cheapest listings have already gone. Neither geizhals nor idealo tracks these radios, so there's no price history. One signal: prices are rising. The FlightAware stick went from $20.95 to $45.99, and the ADALM-Pluto has roughly doubled since launch. amazon.de has Prime Deal Days on 6–7 October, which may cut the Nooelec prices.

Rules in Denmark (not legal advice)

Receiving unencrypted radio is generally allowed. Straffeloven §263 makes it an offence to secretly listen to or record conversations between other people, so don't record or share private voice traffic. Don't try to break encryption. Transmitting from a HackRF or Pluto needs an amateur licence from SDFI, except within licence-free bands such as 868 MHz under their power and duty-cycle limits.

Spotting a fake RTL-SDR Blog V4

Buy only from the official RTL-SDR Blog Amazon, eBay and AliExpress accounts or the resellers on rtl-sdr.com. Warning signs on a listing include a flat case, four screws per side, a coloured case or “Pro” branding, no NSY QC sticker, and HF described as “direct sampling”. After end-of-line, marketplace “V4” listings are almost all clones.

Brunata Online

If your building uses Brunata Online, the portal already shows your consumption, at lower resolution. The community Home Assistant integration (ha-brunata) is marked as not working yet, so radio is the practical route to live data.

10Rerun playbook

This research leaves a rerun file at sessions/2026-10-04-sdr-radio-hardware/sources.py. To refresh prices without redoing the research, run:

python3 scripts/rerun.py run sessions/2026-10-04-sdr-radio-hardware

Then read rerun/digest.md. AliExpress, the Electrokit checkout and the LOH Electronics quote are manual tasks. Things to check next time: whether LOH's Danish shipping makes it the cheapest V4 kit; when the V4L returns to EU stock and its macOS support; and whether Brunata uses the factory default key.
